Bowling Alley at W. G. Hefner VA

Bowling Alley – W. G. Hefner VA Medical Center

Charlotte, NC – September 15, 2013

The Armed Forces Families Foundation funded a $40,000 renovation of the six‐lane bowling alley at the Charlotte VA Medical Center.  The bowling alley is used daily by the veterans in the hospital, including both Geriatric and Mental Health Veterans, as well as outpatients. The current bowling alley is a six‐lane, vintage-style Brunswick system with a special wheelchair-made roller that has been adapted to allow wheelchair-bound veterans to participate in this sport, some of whom have been sent to the National Wheelchair Games and National Golden Age Games. Local bowlers come to the Charlotte VA bowling alley and will give clinics and assist those that are interested in the sport as well. The bowling alley is run by the Therapeutic Recreation Unit.

The renovation to the VA Medical Center’s bowling alley provides a recreational outlet for the military patients and their family members who are at the center. The new equipment makes the facility run more efficiently, along with an improved appearance and a more kid-friendly atmosphere. This project was completed in September, 2013.
